Are You Reading the OYD book?

Are you reading through The One Year Devotions for Girls Starring Women of the Bible? If so, which Bible woman so far is your favorite? Which are you most like? What have you learned from each? Middle School Survival Manual Reviews

Serena A. Pace is the director of middle school ministry in Texas who recommends The Middle School Survival Manual. Pace reports, “The Middle School Survival Manual does more than offer students practical ideas for handling real-life situations. It takes students a step further and teaches them self-leadership skills that can be practiced now, skills that will last a lifetime. The Middle School Survival Manual If you have children, relatives, neighbors or friends who are starting middle school, Katrina Cassel's book, The Middle School Survival Manual offers a timely dose of practical encouragement. It is filled with study tips, friendship pointers, personality quizzes, thought-provoking questions, and planning charts to help all types of students. Each lesson ends with two or three "Verses to Think About." Cassel's goal is to let students know God is with them and has a good plan for them, and teach students how to organize their lives, live out their faith and make the most of the middle school years. Beginning chapters cover topics such as goal-setting, improving grades and test performance, and adjusting to a new school. Cassel continues by teaching students about friendship and faith, how to choose the best activities, and identifying academic and personal strengths.Cassel uses current education theory (e.g. Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences; visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles) to coach students to be in charge of their own learning. She also guides readers in choosing friends and repairing suffering friendships, as well as being a gentle witness for Christ in various school situations. A chapter-by-chapter discussion guide is included at the end of the book.What I Like: This is an excellent guide for students transitioning from elementary school to middle school. Cassel's practical steps will calm apprehensive students, and her wise advice will inspire confident students to reach out to others and tell them about their faith. I like the way each chapter begins with an engaging story, followed by personal questions. Readers are asked to think about their own response in a similar situation, in order to connect more easily with material in the chapter. I also really enjoyed taking the quizzes and finding out more about my personality. Many middle school students will find this information new, interesting and helpful.Faith in Christ forms the foundation of each chapter, and Cassel assumes readers are growing and maturing in their walk with Jesus. However, you could use much of the information in a public school setting as well. What I Dislike: I have only minor complaints. The font is quite small, as are the spaces to answer questions and complete the planning charts. Readers may want to use a journal to write out their answers instead. The cover pictures a photo of a curly-haired Caucasian boy. Although he is cute, the book may not appear as appealing to girls or students of color at first glance. And, the book ends abruptly, with the chapter on multiple types of intelligence. A summary or list of next steps would have been nice. However, none of these issues should overshadow the message of this helpful and encouraging book.Overall Rating: Very GoodAge Appeal: Middle School (5th-8th grade)

Oh my goodness! We started a Bible study with grade 2/3 girls (10 of them) and we all LOVE the book and the small group of girls! We were going to meet every 2 weeks but are now meeting weekly. The book is great, goes through every book of the Bible, some less thoroughly than others, and it is awesome! We gave each girl one of the backpack Bibles for girls as well. This book makes an awesome book to do with a couple of girls.

Just for Me: The Bible is really good. I like it because it has a lot of crafts and Katie and Sarah stories in it. I like to read the stories. I did the Bible bookmark craft, the door knob hanger craft and the trail mix so far. I can't wait to finish the book! Girls' leader review: Oh my goodness! This is a wonderful devotional. As as family with our girls is gives us an overview of the whole Bible. It helps us convey the "big picture" and the whole story. It has triggered great discussions.

Best Bible book of allA Kid's ReviewThe book is about the whole Bible. It tells how God created the world, the flood, David and Goliath, Jesus' birth and all the other main Bible stories. There are activities that explain the Bible. There are Bible verse puzzles too. I recommend you get it because it's fun to read and you'll enjoy it.

Christian Books review:
My granddaughter has reached a difficult stage in her life and has been grounded for the summer. I am so thankful for this devotional because my granddaughter not only likes it, but she is finding out so much about herself through God's eyes, and has started using her talents in a positive manner instead of the previous negative ones. The activities at the end of each chapter solidify what she has read, and helps her to apply the information to her own life. Great book!

Our daughter picked out this book to use as a fun Bible study with her friends. The girls meet once a week and cover one of the "tips." The girls have enjoyed the book, memorized a verse each week and have had a blast doing the crafts. Our group of girls are in third grade. Some of the stories relate to girls a little older (ex. running on the track team), but overall they can apply the lessons to their everyday lives. Godly principles are taught throughout the book. The parents and girls in our group have all LOVED it!

I love it for the values it teaches and my daughter loves it for the fun stories and crafts. Unlike some books, the crafts were very doable and the directions easy to follow. A wonderful fun read for girls.

Amanda G. Weitzel "churchiegirl" (St. Paul, MN United States) - See all my reviews I am a youth worker at a church and have been using this book with a small group of 6th grade girls. We read the chapters together and then do the craft projects together. The girls love the stories and really seem to understand the topics that are covered. They LOVE the craft projects. For some of the chapters that didn't have projects, I created my own that went with the theme of the chapter. It has been a great book for our group and perfect for the middle school aged girl. The reading level is appropriate, it is relevant and fun.

A Kid's Review

This review is from: The Christian Girl's Guide to Being Your Best (Paperback) I got this book for my birthday. After looking at it in a store, I decided it was perfect for me. After getting it, I have really been inspired. Written to preteen and teen girls, this book covers all the things girls need to know. Fun quizzes, real life stories, questions, crafts, and fictional stories all make this book great. There is so much more then what I have just mentioned, however. The greatest thing about it is that it inspired me to start writing books to preteen and teen girls. I am currently writing a fiction book. The author has inspired me so much. If you are a preteen or teen girl, or you know one, this is the one book you really need to get.

The book is interactive with places throughout the pages for the reader to record their thoughts and ideas.Numerous pencil-sketches illustrate the pages.
