A Proverb a Day

During the month of October our family reads through Proverbs a chapter a day. We've done this for about 6-7 years. On day one--October 1-- we gather in the morning. 5:40 a.m. to be exact. And we read a chapter with each person reading a verse until we're done.

Normally we have almost as many different version of the Bible as people. That can be both fun and very confusing. So this year we're going to read it from the same version off our kindles. This is a first. After we read the chapter, we each pick our verse of the day.

At the end of the month we pick our favorite 3 or 4 verses and share them. And we have something special like Chinese carry out, Subway, Taco Bell etc. Food is a powerful motivator for my family.

Why not  join us this year? Just start on October 1 and read a chapter of Proverbs each day.You can read it HERE if you don't have a Bible. Or download the free Bible from amazon.

Why read the  book of Proverbs? Because it's the ultimate how-to book. How to make friends, how to make good choices, how to avoid big mistakes, how to walk with God. It's a book of wisdom, and having wisdom is a sure way to have a successful life. Not necessarily a life of wealth and fame, because those aren't the true marks of a successful life. But a life of walking on the right path, making the best choices for yourself and those you are responsible for, and making a difference in your corner of the world.

So grab your Bible or electronic device and get ready for a dose of practical advice from the ultimate wise guy-Solomon.

Scuba Adventures

In May I tried scuba in order to be more authentic while writing about one of my fiction characters. Jasmine and I did the two hour intro class together. We did much better than we thought we would, so we decided to go ahead and certified.

Here are pictures from our classes
We did our initial training at a pool. There was a whole long checklist of skills we had to complete.

We had a whole textbook to read and an exam to take. We both passed on the first try.

Then we did dives at a state park about 45 minutes from us. It has jetties, and lots of cool things swim near the jetties.

I love the emerald water and white sand.

Jasmine and Alex, our instructor.

Ty was home in July and did a dive with us.

We were shallow enough that Jessica could photo bomb us with her snorkel equipment. She's pregnant and can't dive.

about 40 feet down
we went down to 67 feet (with an instructor so it wasn't a violation of our certification)
These last few pictures are from Saturday.

I love the feeling of movement in this last photo.

I down to 67 feet for my fiction character. What has a fiction character inspired you to do/try?
